The Afghanistan Women Player's Union was formed in 2026 to represent the collective interest of Afghan Women playing football around the globe.
In nations where there are football federations, there exists established or emerging vehicles for player representation, which work to ensure that the voices of players are included in decision making processes. In Afghanistan, the systematic destruction of the rights of women and girls in public life has meant that their voices have been lost. In support of our sisters in Afghanistan, we are working to return this voice to sporting discourse from the diaspora, and give a platform to Afghan Women in Football around the globe to represent their interests, from the elite sportswomen of the National Team, to those working towards that goal, whilst ensuring that the voices of women in Afghanistan are never forgotten.
Representation is important, on the pitch, in board rooms, in the media, and in debate. After the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, Afghan women were deprived of their voice and their freedom, and whilst progress has been made on the playing field and the Afghanistan Women's National Team have returned to playing international, competitive football, there is still a need for the representation of the voices of the women of Afghanistan in the sporting conversation.
This will be a place for members around the world to discuss their concerns, their hopes and their successes, in a safe space, whether international athlete or local grassroots player. This is their chance to make their voice heard, and have a group to support them in their time of need.
In spite of the Taliban’s attempts to silence Afghan women in the diaspora and still stuck in the country, we want to make sure the world hears about the stories of Afghan women; whether its those that play on the weekend but make music in the week, or play elite level football whilst supporting a charity close to their heart, we want a place to tell their stories.
The rich history of the AWNT and its players must be preserved for future generations in spite of the Taliban's attempt to remove women from public life, to keep alive the story of the players who made the team the force it is today under the auspices of FIFA. This will be a place to record that history, and ensure that it is never forgotten.
